From Transport Tycoon to Transport Tycoon Deluxe
Transport Tycoon De Luxe is an occasional alternative spelling of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, often shortened to TTD Transport Tycoon. The 1994 Transport Tycoon game and the enhanced 1995 Deluxe edition are distinct releases. For a Windows-focused comparison, read our original-vs-Deluxe guide.
1994: the transport business formula
Chris Sawyer’s original Transport Tycoon placed players in charge of a growing travel and freight company. Success came from choosing routes, financing construction, buying vehicles and connecting demand with supply. Its appeal was the interaction between an evolving map and a network that the player had designed piece by piece.
1995: the Deluxe edition
Transport Tycoon Deluxe expanded the 1994 concept with additional environments, scenarios and vehicles. The familiar company-building loop remained, but changes in geography and available cargo helped different playthroughs feel distinct. Deluxe became the version that many PC strategy fans remember when they talk about “TTD”.
The 2013 mobile game is different
A separate Transport Tycoon release arrived for iOS and Android in 2013. The original website preserved in our source archive describes that mobile edition, not a current Windows 11 port of the original Deluxe. This independent guide focuses on the PC classic and labels archival franchise screenshots accordingly.
OpenTTD and modern Windows
OpenTTD is a separate open-source simulation based on the design of Deluxe. It brings new interfaces and capabilities while allowing the use of free replacement graphics and audio. Players who legally own old game data can optionally follow its manual to use those legacy assets.
