Transport Tycoon Deluxe Road Vehicles and Bus Routes

Use road transport for practical feeder services, small towns and short cargo deliveries on Windows PC.

Pick the right job for road transport

Buses and trucks are useful where a railroad would be expensive or difficult to justify. A small passenger route between adjacent towns lets you learn timetable-like decisions without the construction overhead of a railway. Trucks are appropriate for industries separated by a manageable road distance. The cheapest vehicle is not necessarily the best: cargo capacity, route length and frequency all affect the outcome.

Place stops deliberately

Passenger stations work best when they serve actual homes and workplaces. Cargo bays must be near the right producer or destination. A truck station placed outside the collection area creates a journey with nothing to carry. Keep turns and crossings simple, and verify that a completed road connects every stop to the vehicle depot before assigning orders.

Keep fleets under control

As fleets grow, vehicles can bunch up or spend time in depots. Add capacity only when you see queues or consistently full loads. Use understandable order lists and descriptive vehicle names. If two routes share a congested road, consider separate approaches or upgrading one service to rail rather than buying more buses into the same traffic bottleneck.

Understand the limits

Road transport handles small and dispersed demand well, while long-distance bulk cargo often benefits from rail or ships. In OpenTTD, NewGRF sets can alter capacities and operating costs, so an economic rule from a stock game will not always transfer to a heavily modified one. Re-evaluate routes after changing vehicle sets.

Simple two-town bus exercise

Start with two settlements close enough that a bus can complete frequent trips. Place a stop within the populated area of each town, build a connected road and locate a depot that the bus can reach. Purchase one passenger vehicle, assign the two stops in order and allow several cycles before judging the result. If the bus returns empty, check station coverage and the orders. If passengers accumulate, add another vehicle only after considering road congestion.

Cargo trucks as railway feeders

Trucks can move cargo between a remote producer and a railway station when a branch line would be expensive. Design a direct road, avoid congested town streets if an alternative exists and confirm that the train accepts the incoming cargo. A transfer chain needs clear orders in both parts of the journey. Track cargo waiting at the road stop and rail station to find the bottleneck. If cargo accumulates at one leg while vehicles on the other run empty, the two services need rebalancing.
